5th European Beach Handball Championships at the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias

02-06-2008

From 6th-8th June, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias will be hosting the final stages of the 5th European Beach Handball Tour (EBT), an official competition run by the European Handball Federation that decides the best European handball team.

This is the first time that the city of Valencia has hosted an international beach handball competition.  For a few days, the southern esplanade of the Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe science museum will be covered with fine sand to become the field of battle for the best European handball players. Two pitches have been prepared, the largest able to hold 1.000 spectators and the smaller 500.

Teams play in different European tournaments throughout the season and accumulate points in the various official competitions making up the Tour. Three Spanish teams are competing in the men's category: BM Playa Barbate, current European Champions and Spanish Runners-Up, Azuteam from Alcalá de Henares and the Valencian team Grupo Vidal.
In the women's category, as well as Team G Solà the current Spanish Champions, we will be able to see Málaga Costa del Sol and AIS Project, a combined team from Valencia.

Beach handball is increasingly popular, with more and more players joining the ranks every year. This can be seen by both the number of players, currently some 60.000 Europe-wide, and by its increasing popularity in countries with no coastline, such as Switzerland, Austria and Hungary.
