Following in the footsteps of Miguel Hernandez

24-03-2008

Enjoying poetry and nature together is now possible thanks to The Poet Miguel Hernandez Trail. For the eleventh time in a row, the Institut Valencià de la Joventut (IVAJ) (Valencian Youth Institute) is holding an event for young people where they will become more familiar with the author's poetry in the same surroundings in which he created his work.
From the 11th to 13th April the young people will follow the main route taken by the poet by following a trail which will be divided into three stages. The fist stage starts in Orihuela, birthplace of Miguel Hernandez Gilbert. This city profoundly influenced his childhood and youth.  In fact, it was here where he published his first poems and met his future wife, Josefina Manresa.
After passing through Redovan, where the poet's father was born, the participants will arrive at Callosa de Segura. They will then travel to Cox, where Miguel and Josefina's two children were born, Manuel Ramon and Manuel Miguel.  Cox represents the period of family and political commitment in the life of Miguel Hernandez.
The second stage consists of an itinerary that goes from Albatera to San Isidro. After the death of the poet, his wife Josefina Manresa moved to Elche with her son Manuel Miguel.  There, until her death in 1987, she dedicated herself to working as a dressmaker, and to taking care of and protecting the poet's legacy.  In the final stage, the city of Alicante is reached where Miguel Hernandez died in prison.  There he wrote the final poems of the "Cancionero y romancero de ausencias" (Singer and romancer of absences).
The mortal remains of the poet lie in Alicante cemetery, in a tomb in which his wife, Josefina Manresa, and his son Manuel Miguel are also interred.
