Get ready for La Tomatina!
25-08-2008
On the last Wednesday of every August, the town of Buñol celebrates La Tomatina, the summer's most exciting and colourful fiesta, declared to be of International Tourist Interest. At around 11a.m. on 27th August, hundreds of people will pour into the streets between the Avenida del Cid and the Plaza de Ramón y Cajal with just one intention: to throw and get hit by tonnes of tomatoes until their clothes are stained bright red.
If this is your first Tomatina, here are a few words of advice from more experienced participants: leave the flip-flops at home and wear trainers. Wear clothes you're not thinking of wearing for any other occasion and protect your eyes with goggles.
When you're ready, head down to the Plaza where you will be greeted by hoards of people, soon to be armed to the teeth with ripe tomatoes. Remember, the start and finish of the Tomatina tomato fight are signalled by a rocket being launched. And before you throw any tomatoes, you should squash them so they don't cause any real damage.
For the last 63 years, all eyes have been on the residents of Buñol thanks to this curious celebration, as thousands of visitors are drawn here from all over the world to bust the stress built up over the year thanks to the power of the tomato.
