Kites come to Valencia

24-03-2008

Valencia is commemorating one of its longest traditions by celebrating the Valencia City International Kite Festival. The event, in which more than 200 people are expected to participate, will be held on the 28th, 29th and 30th of March.

Flying a kite has been part of their childhood memories for the people of Valencia for over 4 centuries.  A tradition that the Turian capital will commemorate with the "City of Valencia" International Kite Festival to be held on the 28th, 29th and 30th of March.   The organising body for the event, the Catxirulos Asociación (Kite Association), was created with the idea of promoting kite flying as a form of leisure and sport.  With the benefit of the Paseo Maritimo as the perfect area for flying kites and the city's magnificent infrastructure, the festival always coincides with the end of San Vicente Easter Week, dates when kites are traditionally flown in Valencia.

On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March from 10.30 to 18.00 the participants will be able to collect their enrolment documentation.  There is an exhibition of four line kites and a course on handling giant kites. Particularly prominent amongst the main events are, without doubt, the procession of static kites and the demonstration of combat kites, although there are many others.  Flying teams, wind gardens and giant comets will complete the programme of events organised for a competition that will delight the kiddies.  The programme will culminate with the XIV Concurso L'infant de Empinar el Catxirulo (XIV Children's Kite Flying Competition) on Saturday 29th March from 17.00 to 18.00.
