Knights and craftsmen in Manises
19-05-2008
This town in the province of Valencia will go back to mediaeval times to offer visitors the chance to see for themselves how ancient craftsmen worked. There will be about 60 stalls at the Mediaeval market in Manises, all of them carefully chosen to offer a wide range of top-quality products: ceramic ware, silver and enamel jewellery, leather bags, shoes and sandals, hand-knitted shawls, turned wood, stained glass, wooden toys and puppets will take up the Paseo Guillermo de Osma avenue and surroundings.
Many master craftsmen will be in attendance - two smiths with their forge, a baker with his wood-burning oven, a wood carver and an expert stained glass maker, as well as an archery workshop.
Children can make their very own craft items and take home the bowls, bracelets and puppets they have made with their own hands. A falconer with his birds of prey, a farm with animals, a dozen geese waddling around the market and a donkey caravan are sure to delight the younger members of the family.
A group of knights will demonstrate mediaeval fighting techniques, there will be street theatre and several displays by standard-bearers. In the evening, the knights will fight with fire and swords and even the little ones can learn the basics of mediaeval fighting with foam rubber swords and strong helmets. Students from the La Formigueta Academy in Manises will give four performances of oriental dances, while troubadours, stilt-walkers and other mediaeval characters will ensure that the atmosphere is both authentic and very dynamic.
