The Volvo Ocean Race sets sail from Alicante06-10-2008
For the first time in history, the Volvo Ocean Race is setting off from a port in the Mediterranean. On Saturday 11th October, Alicante will experience the enthusiasm and excitement of the tenth edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, a competition that dates back to 1973 and which this year is celebrating its 10th edition. The race will come to a close on June 27th 2009 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Alicante is getting ready for the departure of the most spectacular and extreme race ever held, when some of the most intrepid sailors will go head to head in an unprecedented contest, covering a total of over 37,000 nautical miles. This edition, which is already surpassing all expectations, will feature new boats, stop at eleven ports and is taking place over nine months in a daily struggle against the elements. The start of the Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante will be a day filled with emotions and excitement for the participating teams and all those watching. A wide range of activities have been prepared in the Race Village to bid farewell to the crews. Adventure is setting sail from Alicante!
