Advisement for the celebrations
Sitting down is better
If you have decided to watch the entire entrance processions of both the Moors and the Christians, don't hesitate to hire some chairs that are placed all along the route.
This will stop you ending up with sore feet. Get in contact with the Associació de Sant Jordi (965 540 580) where they will inform you of everything you need to do this. Besides, from the 26th March onwards, you can hire the chairs to watch the Entradas or entrance processions in comfort from the Tourist Info in Alcoy (965 53 71 55). A much more comfortable option is to enjoy the spectacle from a private balcony which is rented out for the occasion. It's normal practice to gather together a group of people to minimise the cost, which varies according to the conditions and the location of the balcony.
In the arms of Morpheus
There is a wide and varied offer of both urban and rural accommodation in Alcoy. The visitor can choose between staying in the town, or in one of the emblematic beauty spots in the surrounding area, such as the Parc Natural de la Font Roja. In both cases, there are options to suit all purses, from a rural country house to a farmhouse converted into a comfortable villa, from a boarding house in the very centre of the festivities to hotels with panoramic views.
In any case, don't forget that it is extremely recommended to book well in advance.
The Disembarkation
Each one of the twenty-eight filaes or army divisions of the Alcoy Festivity has its own social club. It is a must-see visit to go to one of these. Some of the sites for these clubs have rescued old factories from the former industry of Alcoy from certain ruin and disappearance; others have occupied shop front basements in the city centre of what once was a textile workshop or storehouse. The Christian 'filaes' have social meeting clubs with an air of the times of the Reconquest about them. The Moorish ones make you think that you're in a mini-palace in Fez.
Ask around and let yourself be taken to one. Although they are private meeting places, you'll always find a festero (participant in the festivity) willing to act as host who'll help organize a visit for you.
The pleasure is yours
The traditional cuisine of these regions, based on seasonal produce, is both delicious and almost unknown outside this territory. April is still a month for hearty dishes to excite your taste buds and fire your imagination - borreta, olleta, arròs caldós - , are all tasty stews and casseroles, but don't forget to try la bajoca farcida and la pericana, a vegetable-based dish.
El café licor is a type of alcoholic unsweetened coffee, a locally famous enchanted potion which comes into its own during the festivities, accompanying the tapas or bar snacks.
