Advisement for the celebrations
Sitting down is better
If you have decided to watch the entire entrance processions of both the Moors and the Christians, don't hesitate to hire some chairs that are placed all along the route.
This will stop you ending up with sore feet. Besides, from the 11th April onwards, you can hire the chairs to watch the Entradas or entrance processions in comfort from the Tourist Info in La Vila Joiosa (966 851 371). So as to be able to really enjoy the processions what people normally do is to take a few snacks and drinks with them although one can also buy directly there.
Las companyies
Each one of the twenty-two companyies or army divisions of the La Vila Festivity has its own social club. It is a must-see visit to go to one of these. Occupied shop front basements in the city centre of what once was a textile workshop or storehouse. The Christian 'companyies' have social meeting clubs with an air of the times of the Reconquest about them. The Moorish ones make you think that you're in a mini-palace in Fez.
Ask around and let yourself be taken to one. Although they are private meeting places, you'll always find a festero (participant in the festivity) willing to act as host who'll help organize a visit for you.
The Disembarkation
In order to be able to see the disembarkation and all that it involves, it is a good idea to have a proper dinner first as the night is rather long. Wear light clothing given that the month of July is unforgiving, although it is also a good idea to have a jacket at hand for this evening given that you will be spending many hours on the beach and the sea breeze at this time of night can be rather cool.
The pleasure is yours
The traditional cuisine of these regions, based on seasonal produce, is both delicious and almost unknown outside this territory. July is a time to freshen up with a good tapa and a good cold beer in any of our companyies.
The nardo is a type of alcoholic unsweetened coffee, a locally famous enchanted potion which comes into its own during the festivities.
