A whole chain of defence and lookout towers was built near those urban centres closest to the sea. Those nearest the coast were to warn of danger from Barbary pirates or the French fleet. Those further inland were to defend towns and villages at a distance from the nearest castle. In the case of the Conde tower, time has taken its toll, as it also has on the attached house, although inside, one can still appreciate the layout of the floors and the staircase.
