Explore the historic heritage of a beautiful place of worship in Penàguila.

Located in the county of l'Alcoià in the province of Alicante, Penàguila is a pretty village with a great deal of cultural heritage. Not only can you visit elegant residences and historic houses here – such as Casa Gran and Casa dels Set Balcons – you can also tour places of worship, including Santos Médicos chapel and San Roque chapel.

Another important religious site in the village is Nuestra Señora de la Asunción parish church. First constructed in the 14th century, the basilica was later renovated in the 17th and particularly 18th centuries. The Baroque style façade dates back to 1775.

The church has a rectangular floorplan comprising a singular nave. The simple and sturdily built belltower was added in the 17th century. The altar holds a special place in the congregation’s heart as it was built when Penàguila local Joaquín Company was archbishop of València.

Nuestra Señora de la Asunción parish church has a number of chapels, notably Virgen de los Dolores chapel, which is defined by its Neoclassical style.

If you fancy soaking up some local culture and history during your time in the Region of Valencia, Penàguila is a great choice of destination. Wander the village's pretty streets and get lost in the distant past.
