On the Sunday prior to Palm Sunday, there is a spectacular live representation of the Passion and Death of Christ. The first act, the judgement, is staged in the Plaza de la Iglesia square, with the steep streets of the old town subsequently serving as the Via Crucis leading up to the Crucifixion on the Mount (Paraje de la Ermita). Good Friday then sees the local Holy Week guilds take to the streets in processions with statuary and artefacts, most notably Piedad y la Soledad, work of the sculptor Sánchez Lozano, the Santo Entierro, Jesús y la Verónica, La Virgen de la Paz, Jesús Nazareno and La Virgen de los Dolores, the latter two from the hand of local creator of images Joaquín Mayans.
