It was declared Artistic Historical Monument in 1976. A number of different construction eras can be appreciated in this complex. The original chapel dates back to the second half of the XV century. There are still remains of this original structure in the crypt, below the current Lady Chapel. It would appear that the inhabitants of Villena, fleeing from the plague, took refuge in this place, deciding to search out the protection of a patron saint, who was the Virgen de las Virtudes, or Lady of Virtue. The cloisters are very simple, with reduced semicircular arches supported over brick pillars, whereas the galleries are covered. The staircases are on the west side, without maintaining the axis of symmetry with the façade.

The Sanctuary has undergone a number of interventions, but the general aspect tends towards the late Gothic.
