The importance of the "salazonera" technique (the drying and salting of fish) to the Romans has been demonstrated with the discovery of remains excavated in the rock communicating with the sea. Where the entrails of fish together with an abundance of salt produced the highly valued "garum" which, once packed in jars, was distributed over the whole empire. A few metres from the top of l'Arenal the Muntanyar necropolis can be found with nearly 900 pits excavated from the rock.
