As for the church, we know that in 1318 there was already a parish established in Xaló. It seems that the first church was erected on the old mosque, a fairly common practice. However,

the church we see today is neoclassical, with Latin crosses and an octagonal tower. It was completed in 1831 (it took 40 years to build and all of the villagers helped, providing their carts, transport, materials etc..). While it was under construction the masses were held in the Hermitage and also in the Lord's manor house, in front of the church.

The church is dedicated to the Virgin of consolation, popularly known as the 'Verge Pobra' (the lady of the poor) for the state in which she was found during an excavation in the area of Benibrahim (former Muslim hamlet).
