Climbing in the Province of Castellón
Climbing in the Province of Castellón
The geography in the province of Castellón, mountainous and steep, together with a temperate and mostly sunny climate throughout the year, favours climbing. One of the most practised mountain sports in the area.
Without going far from Castellón de la Plana, we find Castellet, an area much appreciated by the climbers of Castellón, both for its proximity to the city and the number of climbing tracks available, a total of 95 divided into six sectors.
A little further north, about 100 km from Castellón de la Plana, we find the climbing area of Devesa-Penya Alta, in Morella. It has 12 tracks and walls well equipped with parabolts.
Not that close from the central sections of the province, in Cervera del Maestre, there is Morral de l'Àngel, an imposing precipice 100 meters tall at the edge of Rambla de Cervera river bed with several climbing tracks.
But not only do we find places to climb inland, on the coast the Peñíscola Castle area is well known, where a wall above the sea can be climbed. Another option is to climb the highest peak in the province, the Penyagolosa, located in Vistabella del Maestrat at 1813 meters above sea level.
Another well-known village in the province of Castellón for its long climbing tradition is Montanejos, located in an area full of huge and abrupt limestone walls. There are a lot of tracks, both for classic and sport climbing. The walls of the Estrecho de Mijares (Chillapájaros) 2km away from town are the most beautiful in Montanejos.
Not so well known but of equal beauty are the areas of Llavalasar in Ribesalbes, Cucala in Borriol, or the Jérica canyon. A wide variety of climbing areas for all tastes, which will undoubtedly delight the most adventurous.
