Flowers of the Region of Valencia: Routes and Places Where to Find Them
In the Region of Valencia, we have diverse and beautiful flora. The best time of year to see it in all its splendour is the spring when taking advantage of the pleasant temperatures; we can take hiking routes to observe the different species of each area.
One of the flowers that we can find in spring is purple cistus, typical of the Mediterranean zones. The black rockrose or Moorish jaguarzo (which, despite its name, is a white flower) is also easy to find. We can observe it in the Mancomunidad del Alto Túria, in the interior of Valencia, where the circular path Pr-CV 114 runs through Benagéber and the viewpoints of the Serranía.
On the other hand, a shrub with an intoxicating smell is the Lavandula dentata, which can be found in much of the Region of Valencia, as it grows in sunny areas and arid soils.
Another shrub whose flower is precious is the hawthorn that, curiously, despite being in our land, is of Japanese origin. One can observe this flower in spring during hiking routes that pass near the coast.
Also, in some areas, we can enjoy the poppy fields, showy red flowers that usually bloom at the beginning of May. Some of the areas that have large poppy fields are Mijares (Buñol, Valencia), Oropesa del Mar (Castellón) and Jávea (Alicante).
Finally, in the Vall de Laguar, in the Marina Alta (Alicante), there are vast fields of cherry trees, so at the beginning of spring, you can take a route to see this spectacular flowering.
These are not at all the only floral species that brighten the fields and mountains of the Region of Valencia. There are hundreds of species with different shapes, colours, and smells that you will find on any hiking route.
