Hiking Route: Senda Los Estrechos and Cueva Negra, Montanejos (Castellón)
Montanejos is one of those special places that combines in one destination activities in nature and relaxation. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, it contains one of the most charming places in the province of Castellón, "Los Baños" fountain. Outcrops of thermal waters that bring their waters to the river Mijares in a stretch in which the stream is encased forming Los Estrechos, creating, as a whole, an unparalleled natural corner in the Region of Valéncia.
The Thermal Village of Montanejos is a paradise for lovers of outdoor activities: climbing, rafting in brave and quiet waters, mountain biking, and hiking are the most practised. Local trails for all levels and two routes that cover the region.
"Los Estrechos" trail is one of the most popular, a circular path of 8 km of medium difficulty that leaves from the vicinity of the Balneario de Montanejos. It crosses the river and goes in continuous ascent, overlapping by a few meters with the GR-7 to reach the top of the wall of the majestic straits from where you get magnificent views of the Mijares river and the viewpoint wall, the Eden of the climbers.
The trail continues down to the river, passing through the spillway of the Arenoso reservoir. Ascending again, it reaches the road, entering the forest on a path over one of the tunnels overlooking the wall of Los Estrechos.
Los Estrechos trail runs between pines, junipers, rosemary and other endemic species of these latitudes where the mountain goat is predominant.
After joining the La Bojera path and taking a detour of a few meters, you arrive at Cueva Negra, one of the largest cavities in the Region of Valéncia, catalogued as a Site of Local Importance. Once again on the main path, you reach the road that leads back to Montanejos.
