Winter Birdwatching in la Font Roja and Serra de Mariola
The Fontras Carrascal Natural Park and the Serra de Mariola are two perfect places for an activity focused on the search and observation of birds: birdwatching.
Contrary to what you might think, winter is the high season to observe and watch birds, especially in our Region of Valencia, since the temperatures remain mild. In fact, in the winter we receive species from the north of Europe that leave their habitat to look for warmer places.
Now, do you want to know what species await you in these two Natural Parks? Let's go there!
Natural Park of Carrascal de la Font Roja:
Located in the Sierra del Menejado, this Natural Park is a paradise for bird lovers. The primary species that can also be found in winter are:
- Coal Tit
- Red Crossbill
- Robin
- Hawk
- Common Tawny Owl
- Bonelli's Eagle
- Royal Owl
- Peregrine Falcon
- Rock Sparrow
- Black Redstart
- Blue Rock Thrush
- Garduña
- Griffon Vulture
Serra de Mariola Natural Park
Like the previous one, this Natural Park is one of the perfect places to see a multitude of birds. Beyond those already mentioned, in the Serra de Mariola you can also discover:
- Black Vultures
- Common Kestrel
- Red Kite
If you are new to this birdwatching, but you want to try this exciting activity, we will give you some tips to make the experience as satisfying as possible:
The best bird watching times are early in the morning (from 7 am to 10 am), when the birds go in search of food and during the afternoon (from 6 pm to 7:30 pm) when they seek a night shelter.
Silence is your greatest ally: make as little noise as possible, avoid sudden movements and be patient. Of course, you have to respect the birds at all times and do not disturb them for any reason (even less if you are trying to take a picture).
Good binoculars are essential if you want to see the specimens in all their splendour. If you are a neophyte, an identification guide will help you recognise the type of bird you are observing. Do not forget water and sandwiches: as we already told you, you will have to be patient (and that task is easier to accomplish with a full belly).
