Edificio de La Mola is an example of Medieval architecture in Benassal and home to the local archaeological museum.

Located in Benassal, Edificio de La Mola is an early 13th century building that was once the property of Berenguer de Carratalá, one of the first known residents of the village. The house is thought to have been the cornerstone around which Benassal started to grow and served as architectural inspiration for the buildings that were constructed at a later date.

La Mola has had various incarnations in its lifetime, namely a home, church, school and even a chapter house and town hall. Nowadays, the building houses Museu Arqueològic de l'Alt Maestrat, an archeological museum that is well worth visiting. In the grand meeting room, with its great stone arches and small windows, you can see collections that tell the story of the many civilisations and settlers that chose to make the area their home. The ground floor of the building is still laid out as a residence.

Though La Mola has been renovated on many occasions, the building as a whole is still intact. Take the time to have a wander around, paying particular attention to the portico.

Part of the old village wall and one of the entrance gates – Arco de la Muela – which both date to Moorish times, are located next to Edificio de la Mola and are worth taking a look at. We then recommend exploring the rest of the historic centre, strolling down narrow alleyways known as carrerons. Though the buildings are not Medieval, the layout of the streets is, painting a pretty picture. So what are you waiting for? Come and visit this historic building in Benassal.
