Built in Medieval times, Benassal’s communal oven was in use until the 1970s and is now a must-visit in the village.

Forn de Dalt in Benassal is one of the biggest and best preserved Medieval communal ovens in the Region of Valencia. It is thought to have been built during the time of the Knights Templar, dating it to the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Over 700 years later, it is still standing. Nowadays, you have the opportunity to come and visit this little slice of history in Benassal, a small village in the province of Castellón.

The building is Gothic in style, comprising one large space and two stone Renaissance arches. Located close to La Mola castle, Forn de Dalt was built when the curtain wall, village and its services were being extended. It was located close to the old town wall and is now part of the remains of Benassal’s fortifications.

The oven was in use until the 1970s, providing a place for locals to come together to make and bake their bread.

When its doors were closed, it fell into disuse. In 2015, a restoration project started and the oven has since been open to visitors. It is also used as a venue for cultural events. A lovely way to give a new lease of life to a building that has a long story to tell. Make sure you come for a visit when you’re next in Benassal.
