Come to Villahermosa del Río in January and discover what the village is all about at a festival dedicated to San Antonio Abad. Bonfires, the blessing of animals and processions bring the village to life with devotion.

On the weekend closest to the 17 January, Villahermosa del Río comes alive with tradition for the fiestas en honor a San Antonio Abad, the festival in honour of San Antonio Abad. Plaza Carlos Fabra hisses and crackles as a huge bonfire burns, emanating a sense of tradition and community.

One of the defining features of San Antonio Abad Festival is the blessing of the animals. Plaza de la Iglesia is filled with horses and other animals in an event that reflects the village’s historic and present-day connection to agriculture. Another classic part of the festival are the tortas, pastries that are handed out around the bonfire, bringing a festive touch to the occasion. You can also expect a toro embolado (a bull event featuring fire) and a vibrant street party organised by the quintos and quintas of the village. These moments step up the festive spirit and excitement characterising the celebration.

On the Sunday, there is a procession up to San Antonio Chapel, accompanied by José Pradas music band, marking a moment of reflection and togetherness around the Eucharist. Donations are also collected by knocking on doors, strengthening community ties and highlighting the charity nature of the festival.

As a whole, the festival in honour of San Antonio Abad in Villahermosa del Río provides an insight into the local community's culture and devotion. Beyond the festivities, the celebration encapsulates the rich local heritage and the connection between the generations in the Region of Valencia.
