The most important time of the year in Benicarló is nearly upon us. The Artichoke Festival is back, with some changes, to pay homage to this exquisite vegetable.

Benicarló is all about gastronomy, culture and tradition. And every January the town celebrates it with one of the most highly-anticipated local events. Yes, the time has come to showcase, pay respect to and value the vegetable it is famous for: the artichoke. 

Benicarló Artichoke Festival is the perfect opportunity to savour the star of Baix Maestrat cuisine. Declared an Event of Local Tourist Interest, the festival invites local restaurants and bars to showcase their very best recipes featuring the artichoke. There are also a number of activities running that revolve around the artichoke. 

Though circumstances are different this year, the 28th edition of Benicarló Artichoke Festival is going ahead, though with a number of changes in place. 

The 2021 edition of the festival will shine the limelight on local bars and restaurants, which will serve a variety of different tapas and run a number of tastings in which the Benicarló artichoke is the centre of attention. Whether it be a savoury dish or dessert, whether they be grilled or used in a sauce, the versatility of the artichoke will be on display in the chefs’ creations. 

Instead of the activities that normally draw in the crowds, this year there is a new initiative that focuses on artichoke recipes. Keep an eye on the programme and bring out your inner chef when cooking with Benicarló artichokes. 

That said, the Artichoke Festival is not all about tasting and savouring delicious dishes: there is also a place for art. Following the success of last year, CarchofArt is back with six different artists showing us how they see the world of the artichoke through their artistic creation. 

It wouldn’t be January without enjoying the delights of the Benicarló artichoke.
