Fira i Porrat de Sant Antoni in Xàbia
The festive calendar of Xàbia starts with the fiestas of San Antonio, which hosts one of the world's "most popular" porrats to honor him.
A "porrat" is a Valencian festive tradition whose origins have been attributed to the veneration of the agricultural society to the saints to get good harvests and fertility for their animals. Therefore, San Antonio, the patron saint of animals, well deserves a party to match him.
In Xàbia, from 6th January to 4th February, Fira i Porrat de Sant Antoni is held, one of the most popular in the Region of Valencia. For three weeks, children can enjoy a complete Funfair on the Avenida Palmela. In addition to other festive events such as parades with dolçaina and tabalet, parade with horses and the two blessings of the animals scheduled in both the village and the Port. In the traditional "cremà" of the big fig tree, there will be music, mistela (sweet wine) and nuts for the people attending to it.
Xàbia has kept its peculiar medieval layout, a network of narrow streets dotted with whitewashed facades, arched portals, Gothic windows and lattices of forge; all this with the characteristic "rough stone" from the area. Stroll along its streets; stop by all kind of shops: long family tradition, in the Municipal Market of supplies as well as local tapas bars or other services. In addition, each Thursday between 8.30 am and 14.00h. there is a weekly market on the square of the Constitution and on the Placeta del Convent. Plan for a perfect winter!
