La Tomatina, a unique event in the world
Buñol celebrates every year the biggest vegetable battle on the planet, one of the Spanish festivals with greatest international projection, where up to 160,000 kilos of tomato are thrown.
La Tomatina de Buñol takes place on the last Wednesday of August and it consists on the launching of ripe tomatoes on the streets among the crowd of people attending the event. This celebration is one of the most popular in Spain of this kind and it has the consideration of Festival of International Tourist Interest. A celebration that you have to live, at least once in a lifetime.
At 10 o'clock in the morning, the first event of La Tomatina begins: el palo jabón, the soaped pole. The challenge is to climb a wooden pole covered in soap that has a ham on its top. While the different contestants try to reach up to it, huge trucks will download the ripe tomatoes. From above, they are distributed among the attendees and finally everything turns into an authentic spectacle when people tend to have fun and find a place for the event.
At 11 o'clock, the fireworks give the starting signal to La Tomatina, it will last only 1 hour. At that moment, the attendees can start the battle by throwing all the tomatoes that are within their reach to the rest of the attendees. The rule is to crush them first so that the blow is not so hard. The end is marked by other fireworks at 12 noon.
La Tomatina in figures: 22,000 attendees, 160,000 kilos of ripe tomatoes and numerous participants from the USA, Japan, the UK, Australia, India, Korea, France and Russia.
