For almost four decades, Mostra d’Artesania d’Altea (Altea Craft Fair) has filled the streets of this shimmering seaside town with stalls stocked with beautifully designed and handmade items. Part of the attraction of the fair is where it is held, namely the highest streets of the town where in the summer months you can take a seat on countless terraces to enjoy a bite to eat and a refreshing drink. 

Beyond being a beach town on the Costa Blanca, Altea is also committed to promoting artisanship and artistry. Throughout Mostra d’Artesania, the participating artisans not only exhibit their beautiful work, but also run workshops that will give you an insight into their savoir-faire. 

As you wander through the townscape defined by its whitewashed façades and blue domes, you’ll come across all sorts of artforms, from ceramics and jewellery to leather creations, items made from recycled materials and a whole lot more. This is a melting pot of creativity full of inventive ideas. Sometimes Altea itself is a source of inspiration, the streets of the town transformed into an outdoor gallery where the work is displayed. 

Part of Mostra d’Artesania d’Altea’s success lies in its connection with the Fine Arts Faculty at Universidad Miguel Hernández, a thriving centre of creation in Altea that draws in the artists of the future with the town’s spectacular landscapes and vibrant atmosphere. Altea also holds other art events, including Les Balconades, in which the balconies of the old town become works of art, and Fira del Xicotet Format, where oil paintings, watercolour works, prints and more, are exhibited in Portal Vell.
