Recovering the tradition of the Casca de Reyes
A traditional sweet of Arab origin made from almonds, sugar, sweet potatoes, eggs, lemon, cinnamon and some other ingredient depending on the area in the Region of Valencia where we are. We will introduce you to this tradition that is enjoyed on the day of Epiphany.
The Casca de Reyes has been the star at the tables of the Region of Valencia since the 15th century until the Roscón appeared. Now the tradition of enjoying this delight of Arab origin that the godparents gave to their godchildren in a box and accompanied by candy is slowly gaining its place. The box that contains the Casca is very important if we talk about tradition since it was customary to inherit them from parents to children and it was also used for the Magi to fill them with sweets, toys and chocolate. Therefore, it had to be put in the balcony or outside of the house.
The recipe and even the appearance are similar to the mocadorà. Note down: the sweet of the casca is prepared with ground almonds, sugar and eggs. It can be filled with candied yolk, sweet potato or pumpkin. It can also be accompanied by cinnamon, orange zest, lemon or meringue. The shape of the Casca can vary between serpent - in reference to eels - and thread. Go ahead and prepare it or look for it in the many traditional bakeries of our land!
Senyor Rei, jo / ja estic ací, porte'm casques per a mi ...Les garrofes i la palla, per al seu (senyor) rossi ...and after this song the youngest of the house can already enjoy the Casca de Reyes. A tradition that we hope will stay in your home for a long time: Happy Epiphany Day!
