The most expected festivities arrive: Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) in La Vila Joiosa
Vila Joiosa is getting ready to be the festive center of the Region of Valencia. During the week 24th to 31st July, the celebrations to honour Santa Marta will be celebrated and within this time, the spectacular festivity of Moors and Christians.
Since 2003, the festivities of Moors and Christians in La Vila Joiosa have the Award as Festivities of International Tourist Interest. It is a well-deserved recognition due to the spectacular nature of the celebration. Different parades with hundreds of people on disguise, great bands of music, gastronomic competitions to taste the dishes from each of the fighting parties, pyrotechnic shows and plenty of parties. And we cannot forget the procession to honour Santa Marta.
However, undoubtedly, the central act of the whole celebration is the Landing. It is celebrated at dawn on July 28th and the whole town is involved in its celebration. It is a historical recreation where a battle takes place between the Moors, who arrive by sea in their boats, and the Christians, who are waiting for them in their camp on the beach.
The sound of drums, the lights and the gunpowder give more emotion to the celebration. When the sun rises above the horizon, the landing and the battle takes place on the beach. At first, the Moors will manage to reach the castle and conquer it. Nevertheless, in the afternoon, the Christian troops take control and manage to expel the Moors out of the city.
The Festival of Moors and Christians of La Vila Joiosa has been held for more than 250 years and it attracts each edition thousands of visitors to the town of Alicante. The capital of the region of La Marina Baixa offers a programme for the festivities with many activities that can be complemented with a visit to the old center, to its colourful houses or to one of the local chocolate industries.
