The San Antón customs of bonfires and animals are deeply rooted in Valencian culture. Check out what all the fuss is about in Caudiel.

Fiesta de San Antón, San Antón Festival, in Caudiel, brings together charming traditions in this special corner of El Alto Palancia. You'll adore experiencing and savouring the local traditions. Legend has it San Antón retired to live in nature and bless animals, and this is where the tradition of bringing your beloved pets to town to receive the traditional blessing originates.

San Antón Festival takes place on the weekend closest to 17 January in Caudiel and features grand hogueras (bonfires) on lovingly decorated streets, with the bonfire in Plaza de España the centrepiece of the festival. A torrà (communal barbecue) is also organised in the main square so that you can tuck into some tasty food and fuel up for the outdoor party taking place later on.

In the past, the working animals would have a day off on this day, and these hard-working creatures are still honoured today. On the following day, the bonfires are set alight and the festivities continue with the revered animal blessings which include spectacular horse races.
