Nevera del Benicadell, El Benicadell ice house in Beniatjar, is an old building used to store ice that is embraced by incredible scenery. To see El Benicadell ice house, you’ll have to walk up to just over 1,200m altitude, to what is known as Alto de la Nevera. This is on the trail that scales the crest of El Benicadell mountain, making it a great choice if you’re keen to do some hiking. The views from here are absolutely breathtaking and will get you reaching for your camera.
The ice house is in a relatively good condition as both the walls and roof are still standing as well as a number of openings like windows and doors.
In the winter months, snow was stored and packed down in El Benicadell ice house, just as it was in other similar buildings. In the spring, it was sold as ice to conserve food. For the workers, it was a tough job. The ice house was built between the 17th and 18th centuries and is calling out to be visited. So pull on your walking boots and get ready to go hiking in an area populated with the remains of other old ice houses. It’s sure to become one of your favourite hiking trails.
