What to do in Ráfol de Salem
Ráfol de Salem is defined by its laid-back atmosphere humming through the tranquil streets, flanked by traditional Mediterranean houses. The stone-covered Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles Parish Church was built between the 18th and 19th centuries and overlooks a little village square. This and the fully-restored public washhouse are two must-see landmarks in Ráfol de Salem.
A great activity while visiting Ráfol de Salem is the short zigzag climb up to San Blas Chapel, which affords great views of the verdant surroundings. Along the way, you’ll come across the Calvary stone stations before being greeted by the quaint white-washed temple.
We’ve saved the best activity until last - a hike up to the peak of Sierra de Benicadell. This 6-kilometre route from Ráfol de Salem is apt for regular hikers, although you can reduce the distance by driving part of the way and starting your walk from PR-CV 213, which takes you directly there.
As you walk, you’ll pass the remains of an old Iberian settlement in Serreta de Ráfol. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even clamber up the peak which is a whopping 1,104 metres above sea level. If you still have some energy left, make your way to the 17th-century Benicadell ice cave for a slice of cool history.
