Benlloc

Things to see in Benlloc 

A good place to start is Benlloc’s traditional historic centre, where some architectural features date back to the 13th century. The old quarter has its roots in the Middle Ages and still retains its almond-shaped layout, which is a legacy of the town’s Islamic past. As you wander through its narrow streets, you begin to uncover the origins of Benlloc and the traces of its former walls. 

What monuments can you visit in Benlloc town centre? 

• The Parish Church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, dating from the 17th century, is undoubtedly Benlloc’s most recognisable landmark. Built in 1614 with the appearance of a fortress, it rises above the town from its hilltop setting. 

• El Molinet de Benlloc is a former water-powered flour mill whose ruins can be found just outside the town centre and are well worth a photograph. 

• The Hermitage of the Virgen del Auditorio combines architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque. It is around a half-hour walk from the centre of Benlloc and rewards the shlep with excellent views. 

• Quartico or the Hermitage of Sant Josep: this modest hermitage and its 20th-century Stations of the Cross overlook the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca and the Mediterranean, giving you a wonderful sense of the surrounding landscape. 

Hiking in Benlloc 

Benlloc also has several routes for hiking that combine local history with relatively easy walking: 

• Camí dels Romans / Via Augusta: this 19 km, low-difficulty route follows part of the longest Roman road in Hispania as it crosses the plain around Benlloc. Along the way, you will encounter a restored archaeological section that reveals the road’s original structure between farmland and the Subarra mountains. 

• Pas de la Fusta: a 15 km route of moderate difficulty that crosses both mountain and lowland scenery, with views towards the sea and a number of traditional water features, including cisterns, wells and drinking troughs. 

• Pas de les Roses: a 3 km, low-difficulty route that offers an easy walk through dry-farming landscapes and areas of pine woodland. 

Wine tourism in Benlloc

Alongside the wines, you may also get the chance to discover the local turrón and other artisan products made in the area.
