Historic tourism in València: The Water Tribunal of the Plain of València
Every Thursday at 12 midday, the representatives of the major irrigation canals of the Turia River gather at the Gothic Apostles Gate of Santa María Metropolitan Church Basilica Cathedral. These canals supply water to the agricultural lands surrounding the city, including towns like Alboraya, Manises and Catarroja, among others.
Dressed in the traditional blusón, a smock traditionally worn by the workers of this agricultural land, the representatives wait for the clerk to announce any complaints that have been raised regarding the use of water. The person making the complaint is heard first and then the accused party presents their side.
All proceedings are conducted orally, including the deliberation that follows. The final verdict is delivered after careful consideration, ensuring neutrality through the involvement of representatives and judges from the irrigation canals that are not connected to the complaint.
The Water Tribunal of the Plain of València has been active since around the 10th century. While other tribunals are known to have existed in the Roman period, this tribunal’s origins are undeniably rooted in the Arabic era. As one of València’s most unique cultural experiences, it’s best to arrive before 12, as the crowds can get quite large.
