The Mascarat Canyon, in Alicante, on the outskirts of Altea, is a unique natural setting where you can embark on a hiking adventure full of breathtaking views. Let us tell you what awaits you in this special spot and how to plan an unforgettable route.
The Mascarat Canyon in Altea
The Mascarat Canyon is part of the Barranc Salat, which crosses the beautiful Sierra de Bernia, full of amazing routes, where it comes closest to the sea, known as Morro de Toix. It is a deep crevice that has been carved out by water over centuries. You will find vertical walls and impressive geological formations. And it’s a photographer’s paradise!
You have bridges crossing it, some dating back to the late 19th century, and you can stroll through a landscape around which interesting legends have grown up. You just have to pick a date for this excursion in Altea!
Mascarat Canyon Route
The start of the Mascarat Canyon Route is at Mascarat beach, so the Mediterranean is your starting point. From there, you have signs leading you to this ravine, along a route that is suitable for children.
The route is circular and about 4 km long. Although it is not technically difficult and the elevation gain is only about 100 m, it’s best to wear suitable footwear because of the uneven terrain. Don't forget to bring water and everything you need to make the activity a success. At the end of the activity, you can visit Altea and have a drink to recharge your batteries, or take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful old town.
