Come discover a different way to experience a destination through “creative tourism” in the Region of Valencia.

As you explore the Region of Valencia, we want you to discover a new way of travelling, learning about and, most of all, enjoying yourself in our beloved destination. The concept of “creative tourism,” where the culture of each destination becomes the star of the trip, lets travellers understand and immerse themselves in the local culture of that destination.

We think the best way to get to know a place is to actively participate in the cultural and artistic endeavors of the local people. That is, by definition, the essence of creative tourism (or “orange tourism,” as we also like to call it).

Originally created in 2000 by Crispin Raymond and Greg Richards, the concept of creative tourism is defined as “tourism that gives visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through their active participation in activities and learning experiences, both of which are characteristic of the destination they’re travelling through."

There are many different ways to experience this type of tourism, especially considering today’s travellers want to do more than just hop on a traditional tour. In addition to making the experience more interesting, creative tourism is a great way to create cohesion between different communities and share and preserve their heritage and traditions.

The Region of Valencia: A creative destination

The Region of Valencia is filled with creative cities. This is part of the reason it’s a place committed to using the creative tourism model as a way to both sustain and further develop its economy.

You can find proof of its creativity in the municipality of Llíria, which was declared a “Ciudad Creativa de la Música” by UNESCO in 2019. It is one of only two destinations in all of Spain to receive this international distinction, the other one being Seville. As a destination that makes a point to preserve its historical musical heritage, and constantly produces excellent musicians, this distinction comes at no surprise.

Dénia, on the other hand, was named a “Ciudad Creativa” by UNESCO for its unbelievable gastronomy. Here, guests can indulge in a variety of delicacies made with ingredients from both the local land and the Mediterranean Sea.

In 2004, UNESCO created the “Red de Ciudades Creativas” network to promote cooperation between cities that factor creativity into their urban development and sustainability. See this creativity for yourself as you reinvent tourism and rediscover the towns, cities and municipalities the Region of Valencia has to offer. When you do, we know your experience will be as unique as it is enriching.
