Recognised as one of UNESCO’s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Misterio de Elche, the Mystery Play of Elche, is a sacred medieval drama that is performed yearly on the 14 and 15 August at Santa María Basilica.

The play reenacts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is performed over two days, with the first act called the Vespra, the Vigil, and the second the Festa, the Feast. The Vigil features the descent of the Mangrana, where a child playing an angel descends from the church dome and then the ascent of the Virgin Mary. The spectacular voices of the singers, some of whom are children, create an incredible atmosphere.
