La Tomatina, which is held in Buñol in the province of Valencia, really is a one-of-a-kind event. Every year, on the last Wednesday of August, thousands of people come together to take part in an incredible tomato fight: it’s certainly an experience to see the streets run red with tomato juice and watch people having a great time.
This Valencian tradition started informally in the year 1945, when some youngsters started throwing tomatoes at each other during local festivities. From this day on, the festival has grown and grown, and La Tomatina today attracts visitors from all over the world. If you’d like to take part, make sure you’re prepared.
La Tomatina 2025: helpful tips
La Tomatina 2025 promises to be an experience you won’t forget, but we recommend taking into account the following tips: the first is to get your ticket in advance!
You are not allowed to bring any fragile or hard objects into the fight area and if you want to take photos, make sure to protect your phone or camera with a waterproof cover. You’ll enjoy the experience much more if you wear goggles, which will prevent your eyes from being irritated by the tomato juice, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind being covered in tomatoes. Always follow the instructions provided by the organisers.
Tomatoes must be squashed with your hands before being thrown and you must make space for the trucks entering the square to distribute them. The end of the fight is marked with a blast, signalling that no more tomatoes can be thrown.
