Two birdwatching experts tell us why the Region of Valencia is a wonderful place to get your binoculars out and enjoy watching the ever-evolving wonders of nature.

With its wealth of natural spaces, ecosystems and wildlife, the Region of Valencia is the perfect place to delve into nature, enjoy watching the animals and spotting plants. Taking the time to get to know the environment we live in is also, of course, a wonderful way to raise awareness about how to protect and preserve it. And there’s no better way to do so than with a spot of birdwatching.

You may not know it, but the Region of Valencia is one of the best places in Spain for birdwatching. The climate, various wetland areas and coastline make it a perfect place for birds to pass through as they migrate in spring and autumn.

Before the winter sets in, birds travel from the north of Europe to Africa. This journey south to hibernate in the warmest areas of the planet is known as postnuptial movement. When, on the other hand, spring arrives, the birds make the same journey, only this time flying north, known as prenuptial movement.

Bird experts such as Itziar Colodro (from Magic & Nature) confirm that its coastline and wetlands make the Region of Valencia a motorway for birds migrating each year. We therefore need to focus on respecting, protecting and preserving the birds’ lives, breeding and food sources.

Autumn is the perfect time of year for birdwatching and the Region of Valencia is the perfect place to enjoy it. David Warrington (from Valencia Birding) says that many birds, such as the bluethroat, do not continue their journey to Africa and instead choose to hibernate in the Region of Valencia, depending on their species and where they have come from.

It has taken many years of hard work to gain a profound understanding of the migratory movements of birds. Research has developed certain tools, including bird ringing, GPS and even bird ‘backpacks’ to identify which birds move where. As birds pass through Valencia on their journey south, birdwatching is an extraordinary activity to enjoy throughout the region.

Both David and Itziar are part of the Asociación de Guías de Birding, created to combine forces, promote sustainable, responsible and professional birdwatching, as well as raise awareness about the natural resources and biodiversity in the Region of Valencia.

Both experts believe birdwatching holidays are a lovely and enriching way to spend time with your kids, family, partner or friends and be among likeminded people who care about the culture, gastronomy and values of the area they are visiting.

Nature is constantly evolving, meaning that every single day is different. Birdwatching lets you observe and learn from nature, creating a special connection with the world we live in. A connection that will make you come back to the Region of Valencia  time and time again.
