Discover one of the Region of Valencia's most beautiful natural areas: the Sierra del Maigmó and Sierra del Sit Protected Landscape. With Maigmó as the highest peak, this rugged mountain range is packed with biodiversity and sits only a short drive from the coast, between Alto Vinalopó, Vinalopó Medio, L’Alacantí and L’Alcoià. Shall we take a closer look?
Sierra del Maigmó and Sierra del Sit: nature in Alicante
This Protected Landscape is home to dense pine woods and holm oak groves, along with unusual inland sandy patches. You'll also come across a rich cultural heritage. Here, old farmhouses and snow pits stand as reminders of local traditions from years gone by.
The Maigmó and Sit ranges are a go-to destination for hiking and mountain sports, with brilliant views out over the Mediterranean. One of the most popular routes on Maigmó starts from the “Balcón de Alicante” in Tibi and climbs to the summit. The “balcony” itself is an easy-to-reach picnic and recreation area, and the viewpoint is superb. On clear days you can see from Benidorm all the way down to Torrevieja.
Even if the walk from the viewpoint to the top looks short, it’s best classed as a moderate route. You’ll need a decent level of fitness, proper footwear and confidence on rocky ground, to conquer it.
The summit trail also includes a short scrambling section, so if you don’t feel up to it, simply stop a little below and enjoy the views from there. Fancy adding Maigmó to your list of hiking routes in Alicante? For more ideas like this, subscribe to our newsletter and get inspired.
