The dress rehearsals take place on the days leading up to the performance (on the 11, 12 and 13 August), offering people who don’t have an advance ticket a great opportunity to see the Mystery Play of Elche in its entirety. On even years, there are additional performances in late October and the 1 November, bringing to life the spirit of this Elche work in the autumn months.
The Mystery Play dates back to the 15th century. Ever since, generation after generation have protected it as one of the greatest cultural treasures in Elche. The work is performed by non-professional singers and a children’s choir which gives voice to Mary and the angels.
The timeless music combines medieval, renaissance and baroque melodies. The Mystery Play of Elche is an experience that transcends theatre into a journey through history, spirituality and tradition.
