Flaons de Morella, flaons from Morella, are a traditional sweet, filled pastry that are undeniably moreish from this part of the province of Castellón. They’re an excellent excuse to visit the medieval and monumental destination of Morella.
The pastry is flavoured with aguardiente, a distilled spirit, and the filling is made with requesón, a soft cheese that is typical of Morella, and almonds.
The ingredients that go into flaons are an absolutely delicious combination. We’d recommend taking a stroll around Morella to explore the great monuments populating this part of Els Ports, building up an appetite for a delicious bowl of sopa morellana followed by tasty flaons. Similar to an empanadilla, this sweet treat can be traced back to the pastry recipes prepared during the Arab and medieval times, a period that greatly influenced the Region of Valencia’s sweet recipes and the ingredients they use. Don’t leave Morella without giving them a try and buy a few more for the way back.
