If summer is your season, celebrate its arrival in style by going to the San Juan Festival in Alicante, an event defined by fire, nighttime antics and plenty of magic. The twinkling city completely transforms thanks to the colourful hogueras - ephemeral artistic sculptures made of cardboard and wood - which are burnt to mark the start of a new festive year on the night of the 24 to the 25 June. But before that, you’ve got to check out the dramatic opening ceremony called the Pregón, the Plantà, which sees locals set up the hogueras on the streets, all the eclectic parades and the processions featuring musical ensembles and traditional attire. Of course, fireworks and pyrotechnics also play an important role in the festivities. Concerts, food stalls and tear-jerking traditions like the Ofrenda de Flores a la Virgen del Remedio, a flower offering to the Virgin Mary also feature. All this and more awaits at this explosive festival. We’ll see you by the fire!
