Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María, Santa María Parish Church in Alicante, is one of the most monumental buildings in the city. Make sure you put it on your sightseeing list during your time in the centre. Construction work on the church commenced in the 15th century, making it the oldest church in Alicante and a must-visit if you are interested in history and architecture.

Santa María Parish Church is defined by two styles: Gothic and Baroque, which reflect the passing of the centuries in which it was built. This combination of styles imbues this place of worship a unique beauty.

Step into Santa María Parish Church through three Baroque doors and you will find yourself standing in the one nave, lined with side chapels situated underneath buttresses. Take your time to look around the interior of the church, stopping off at the Rococo-style high altar (created in the 18th century), which will blow you away with its endless details. There is also a magnificent Baroque organ dating back to the year 1653. We’d recommend taking a guided tour around Alicante to discover Santa María Parish Church and other fascinating sights. Are you up for it?
