The Festa de la Mare de Déu de les Neus i el seu Castell a la Mar, also known as the Virgen de las Nieves y su Castillo en la Mar Festival, is one of Calp’s most deeply rooted and emotionally charged celebrations. Held in Calp, Alicante, it brings together locals and visitors in a powerful expression of tradition and community.

When does the Virgen de las Nieves Festival take place in Calp?

The festival is celebrated from the final days of July through to the first week of August, with 5 August marking the main day in honour of the town’s patron saint. On this date, the much-anticipated Castell a la Mar takes place—a spellbinding firework display launched from the sea that lights up the bay from Arenal-Bol Beach and draws crowds along the coastline. It’s the most eagerly awaited fireworks event of the year.

The programme for the Virgen de las Nieves Festival features street parades, religious ceremonies, live performances and open-air evening festivities. One of its most distinctive moments is Día del Fadrí, when local young people turning 18 symbolically take over the Town Hall and “run” the streets of Calp for the day, playfully adapting local rules for this one-off celebration. It’s a festival that highlights Calp’s strong sense of participation and its enduring bond with both tradition and the sea.
