Las Murallas de Calp, Calp's ancient town walls, also known as the Torreó de la Peça, stand as a reminder of the town’s defensive past against pirate attacks. Calp was first fortified between the 13th and 14th centuries, and in the 16th century King Charles V ordered repairs following repeated raids. At that time, access to the walled town was through a single gateway known as El Portalet.
The section known as the Torreó de la Peça was added after another major attack in 1744. As part of a wider fortification plan, a second wall was built to enclose both the old citadel and the surrounding settlement.
The popular name Torreó de la Peça comes from a small fort that once stood here and housed an artillery piece before being demolished in the 20th century, reflecting the strategic importance of the town’s defences.
Today, this historic site offers a glimpse into Calp’s past and its long-standing efforts to protect itself from the sea and outside threats. It's well worth including in any visit!
