The tower is situated in a protected area of outstanding natural beauty that used to be the frontier line between the kingdoms of Castilla and Aragón until 1296, when the monarch King Jaime II finally annexed these territories for the Aragonese crown and thereby the Kingdom of Valencia.

The tower was constructed in 1554 as a defence system against the Berber pirates, as part of a network of watchtowers all along the Valencian coastline.

Although the upper part of the tower is quite damaged, it still keeps the rest of its outline which lets us see what the original structure looked like.
