Travel back to the Medieval period with the performance of Misteri d'Elx, a century-old musical drama of the death, assumption and crowning of the Virgin Mary.

Misteri d'Elx, known as the Mystery Play in English, is one of the most famous celebrations in the Region of Valencia. Listed Immaterial Cultural Heritage by UNESCO and a Festival of International Tourist Interest, the Medieval play is a sacred musical drama of the death, assumption and crowning of the Virgin Mary.

On the 14 and 15 August, Basílica de Santa María in Elche becomes the stage for the drama, which is entirely sung. Misteri d'Elx is one of the few dramas performed in places of worship that survived the prohibition of this in the 17th century. The play has two acts: the first on the 14 August celebrates the Vespra; while the second on the 15 August depicts the day of the Mother of Jesus. From the 11 to the 13 August, you can also attend the rehearsals.

On even years, on the 19 and 30 October and the 1 November, there are additional performances of the play. Dating back to the 15th century, Misteri d'Elx has no fewer than 259 verses that are still performed today. A long tradition that is close to local people’s hearts and well worth a watch.
