El Parque El Palmeral Santa Pola, El Palmeral de Santa Pola Park in Santa Pola, is not just a natural space with shaded areas and children's playgrounds. Inside, it preserves the remains of a stately Roman villa that was part of the urban and commercial life of the ancient Portus Illicitanus.
Built in the 4th century AD, this stately home stands out for its large central courtyard (peristyle) surrounded by a wide corridor that leads to several rooms decorated with polychrome mosaics and wall paintings. Among the most notable spaces are the triclinium (dining room), the oecus (living room) and several cubicula (bedrooms), which reflect the lifestyle of the wealthy families of the time.
The remains found also show the use of materials such as marble and alabaster, while revealing details of everyday Roman life: oil lamps to light up the nights, and spaces dedicated to worship, especially to the goddess Venus, protector of sailors.
Without a doubt, El Palmeral Santa Pola Park is a place to visit if you are in the province of Alicante.
