Tucked away in the deepest corners of the Region of Valencia are some villages that are as enchanting as they are welcoming. One such village is located in Alt Maestrat in inland Castellón province. Ares del Maestrat is a place where time has stood time and you can feel history in the streets.
Ares del Maestrat is a little haven where peace, tranquillity, history and nature are king. The perfect location for a day out with your family, loved one or friends, the village will seduce you with its charms, making you fall head over heels in love with it by the end of the day.
What to see in Ares del Maestrat
Ares del Maestrat perches on a rocky cliff where you can see the remains of the historic castle. This elevated viewing point affords spectacular views over the beautiful county of El Maestrat and the mountainous landscape of the province of Castellón.
A tiny village with a local population that doesn’t quite reach two hundred, Ares de Maestrat has a beautiful historic centre. Here you’ll find Plaza Mayor, from which you can explore the most interesting monuments in the village, such as the former market with its Gothic-Mudejar arches dating back to the 14th century.
As you continue your stroll around the village, you won’t want to miss Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción with its stunning Baroque façade and unusual bell tower that is shorter than the church building itself. You’ll also want to visit the village hall which houses the former Ares del Maestrat prison.
Once you’ve finished your walk, why not treat your taste buds to some local cuisine? Ares del Maestrat is famed for olla, a traditional meat stew from Castellón.
