Discover the old walls that used to encircle Sant Mateu centuries ago. You’re going to love this destination in the province of Castellón.

Murallas de Sant Mateu, the Walls in Sant Mateu, were built between 1357 and 1380, comprising what was the second walled enclosure in the destination. The Walls were some 1,600m long, had up to eight gates and crenellations. A section of the Walls in Sant Mateu is still standing close to the River Palancia, giving the charming destination a medieval feel. The sight of the Walls will get you reaching for your camera.

Other, smaller ruins still exist and the materials used to construct the walls have been used for other buildings and monuments over the centuries.

During your time in Sant Mateu, we’d also recommend seeing San Mateo Apóstol Archpriest Church, an astonishing Valencian Gothic church that will impress you both inside and out.
