Cheese tasting in Castellón: a province full of flavour
Our cheese-tasting route for the interior of Castellón starts in Almedíjar, in the heart of the Sierra de Espadán. This charming municipality is really worth a visit; the streets are packed with interesting things to see, and we’d also recommend the ruta de los oficios (crafts route), a simple hike that’s full of delightful enclaves. You can also go in search of the remains of the Roman road, which still provides an active pathway, or the ancient fortifications. And of course, we’d urge you to buy some of Almedíjar’s excellent cheeses.
Another great spot to try Castellón’s cheeses is Montanejos; in fact, they’ve even got a fair dedicated to artisanal cheese! Top tip: combine this activity with a bath in the hot open-air springs at the Fuente de los Baños, or with a hiking route that will give you loads of gorgeous photo opportunities, notably around the shimmering Chillapájaros Strait.
Benassal is another must-see on your Castellón cheese-tasting tour, primarily because of the variety of activities it offers. A large portion of its Medieval heritage remains intact today, and its waters are known for their outstanding quality. The area is also home to a fascinating archeological museum, the perfect counterpart to your cheese route.
Continuing the historical theme, the village of Catí is known for both its delicious cheeses and its beguiling old quarter, the perfect place to lose yourself as you meander around its sun-dappled streets. If you want a spot of senderismo, or hiking, the Molinell and Montlleó rivers offer some of the most beguiling scenery you’ll find anywhere.
Lastly on our Castellón cheese tour, we’ve got to talk about Morella. You may well have heard about this Medieval destination, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it in person. There’s so much to see here, but we’d definitely recommend a visit to the castle and the old covered streets, and be sure to save a bit of time to enjoy the Santa María Archpriest Basilica. Morella specializes in the creation of cottage cheese, a core ingredient of its traditional pastry, the flaon.
